346th Infantry Regiment Combat History

The 346th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp McCain, Mississippi, on December 15, 1942, and served with the 87th Infantry Division through training, England, and entry into France that December. After the division relieved elements in the Metz sector, the 346th moved to Gros-Rederching and relieved the 104th Infantry on December 10 as the 87th shifted toward the Saar-German border. It crossed into Belgium on January 12, 1945, was attached briefly to the 4th Infantry Division, and then moved into Luxembourg.

During the Ardennes counteroffensive, the 346th worked on the division's left as the 345th and 347th fought along the Bastogne-St. Hubert road. Its mission was to block roads entering St. Hubert from the south and hold around St. Hubert and Vesqueville while the division fought through Moircy, Jenneville, Bonnerue, and Tillet. When the division took over positions along the Sauer, the 346th captured Wasserbillig on January 23. After the shift back into Belgium, it took Espeler and towns south of St. Vith on January 26, then joined the advance against the West Wall.

The regiment attacked with the 345th on February 26 against remaining fortified positions and helped reduce Ormont by March 1. With the 347th it cleared to the Kyll by March 4, then joined the three-regiment advance after the Kyll crossing. On March 7, operating on the division left, the 346th cleared Esch as the 347th and 345th moved through adjacent zones toward the Ahr. In April, after the 87th relieved the 90th Division north of the Werra, it participated in the Thuringer Wald advance, helped Task Force Sundt, took Ehrenstein and Altremda, crossed the Saale sector, and reached toward Zeulenroda.
