Notes

Date Activated The date the division was activated or inducted into federal service. For National Guard units, this is the date of induction into federal service, not the original formation date of the Guard unit.

Entered Combat The date the division first engaged in combat operations against enemy forces.

Days of Combat The total number of days the division was engaged in active combat operations. This does not include periods of rest, occupation duty, training, or transit.

Casualties The total number of killed in action, wounded in action, captured, and missing in action. Source: Army Battle Casualties and Nonbattle Deaths in World War II, Final Report, 1 December 1941 – 31 December 1946.

Campaign Dates The dates shown after each campaign name are the official dates of the campaign as designated by the War Department — not the specific dates the division participated. A division may have entered or departed a campaign before or after these official dates.

Division Origin Divisions originated from four sources: Regular Army (numbers 1–25), National Guard (26–45), Organized Reserves (46–106), and Army of the United States. There are exceptions to this numbering pattern noted in individual division pages.
