46th Armored Infantry Regiment Combat History

The 46th Armored Infantry Regiment was activated at Fort Knox, Kentucky, on October 1, 1941, as the 46th Infantry Regiment (Armored), assigned to the 5th Armored Division. It was redesignated the 46th Armored Infantry Regiment on January 1, 1942. During the armored force's expansion, the regiment trained at Camp Cooke, California, and participated in the California Maneuvers from August to October 1942. It then moved to the Tennessee Maneuver Area in March 1943 and to Pine Camp, New York, in June.

The regiment's World War II record as a regiment ended before overseas combat. On September 20, 1943, at Pine Camp, the Army reorganized it into separate armored infantry battalions. The regiment, less the 1st and 2nd Battalions, became the 46th Armored Infantry Battalion; the 1st Battalion became the 47th Armored Infantry Battalion, and the 2nd Battalion became the 15th Armored Infantry Battalion. When the 5th Armored Division later entered combat in France and advanced through northern France, Luxembourg, Germany, and to the Elbe, its infantry fought in that battalion organization, not as the 46th Armored Infantry Regiment.
