The 476th Armored Infantry Regiment was activated at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, on July 15, 1943, and assigned to the 16th Armored Division. Its life as a regiment lasted less than two months. On September 10, 1943, at Camp Chaffee, it was reorganized into the armored division's battalion structure.
The regiment, less the 1st and 2nd Battalions, became the 18th Armored Infantry Battalion. The 1st Battalion became the 64th Armored Infantry Battalion, and the 2nd Battalion became the 69th Armored Infantry Battalion. The 16th Armored Division did not reach France until February 1945 and saw its brief combat service in the final days of the war, including the drive on Pilsen and the Skoda works on May 6, 1945. That service belongs to the successor battalions and combat commands, not to the 476th Armored Infantry Regiment. The regiment-level record is therefore limited to activation, assignment, and conversion before combat.
