6^th Armored Infantry Regiment

The 6th Armored Infantry Regiment entered the armored force from the old 6th Infantry. It was redesignated as the 6th Infantry (Armored) and assigned to the 1st Armored Division on July 15, 1940, then became the 6th Armored Infantry Regiment on January 1, 1942. After training at Fort Knox and in the Louisiana and Carolina maneuvers, the regiment moved through Fort Dix, sailed from New York on May 31, 1942, and reached Ireland on June 11.

Elements of the regiment fought in the opening North African campaign before the regiment's main arrival there in December. During the Oran landings, the 2nd Battalion was part of Task Force RED, and Company E helped the armored flying column seize Tafaraoui airfield on November 8, 1942. In Tunisia, battalions and companies of the regiment served in 1st Armored Division combat commands during the fighting around Tebourba, Ousseltia, Kasserine, Maknassy, and the final drive toward Mateur and Ferryville. The regiment's infantry was repeatedly used to hold ground, clear high ground, and stiffen armored task forces in terrain that limited tanks.

The regiment landed in Italy on October 28, 1943, and entered its most concentrated regiment-level fighting along the approaches to Cassino. On December 31 it took positions on Monte Lungo. In early January 1944 Task Force Allen, built around the 6th Armored Infantry, cleared hills west of Monte Lungo and attacked Monte Porchia. The assault gained the objective but left the regiment badly depleted after heavy combat and winter exposure. The division then shifted to Anzio, contained the February German assault, and broke out toward Campoleone, Albano, and Rome in May and June. On June 27, 1944, at Bolgheri, the regiment was reorganized as the 6th, 11th, and 14th Armored Infantry Battalions.
