91st Infantry Division Combat History

The 91st Infantry Division moved into Italy in mid-1944, with the 361st Infantry Regiment committed first at Anzio before the division assembled for operations north of Rome. The 363rd Infantry Regiment entered Livorno on July 18 and raced north to Pisa on July 24, while the rest of the division reached the Arno at Pontedera before going into defensive positions along the river.

The division's central campaign came with the assault on the Gothic Line in September 1944. Its regiments fought the Battle for Monte Monticelli and cleared the Futa Pass in heavy combat before taking Monte Beni and Monte Oggioli against determined resistance. The Battle for Livergnano Escarpment from October 9-15 — a series of assaults against steep cliffs and interlocking positions — ended with the fall of Livergnano on October 14, but terrain and autumn weather halted the advance south of Bologna, and the division spent a long winter in the mountains.

When the final offensive opened in April 1945, the division attacked up Highway 65, took Monte Adone and the surrounding heights, and began pursuit operations on April 20 as German resistance collapsed. Crossing the Po at Sermide on April 24, it swept northeast to Treviso on April 30, days before the German surrender in Italy on May 2 ended the campaign. Its operations extended from Anzio through the Gothic Line to the final advance across the Venetian plain.
