334th Infantry Regiment Combat History

The 334th Infantry was organized with the 84th Infantry Division at Camp Howze in October 1942, landed in France on 1 November 1944, and entered Germany on 13 November. Its first campaign was the Geilenkirchen salient. During Operation Clipper the regiment fought at Prummern, where British flame tanks helped eliminate resistance, then seized the high ground northeast of the village in the surprise action remembered as Mahogany Hill. Attempts to push from Prummern toward Beeck on 21-22 November bogged down in mud, mines, and German fire, but the regiment remained central to the division's renewed Roer approach. On 2 December a battalion followed artillery preparation closely into Leiffarth, securing the village within half an hour and helping protect the 335th Infantry's exposed hold on Lindern.

The German Ardennes offensive pulled the division to Belgium. On Christmas night Companies A and K of the 334th, joined by Company L, 333rd Infantry, attacked Verdenne. Company K ran into German tanks before the assault, yet survivors continued into the village; Company G held the Hampteau bridge site against an attack supported by the Fuehrer Begleit Brigade. Back in Germany, the 334th led the 84th Division's Roer crossing at Linnich on 23 February 1945. Company A crossed under artillery cover, and the 1st Battalion took Koerrenzig before daylight, turned north along the east bank, and fought into Baal.

The regiment later cleared Hetzerath and Granterath as the division opened the road to the Rhine. On 2 March, reinforced by 771st Tank Battalion elements, it tried to bypass Krefeld and rush the Hitler bridge at Uerdingen, but orders changed after the column became involved in the city. The 334th pushed to Homberg, found the Rhine bridges destroyed, crossed the Weser-Leine route in April, seized a Leine bridge near Guemmer, and entered the Elbe phase.
