335th Infantry Regiment Combat History

The 335th Infantry was organized with the 84th Infantry Division at Camp Howze in October 1942 and reached France on 4 November 1944. It saw its first combat before divisional combat, serving briefly with the 30th Infantry Division, then entering Germany on 13 November and later attaching to the 2nd Armored and 102nd Infantry Divisions during the Geilenkirchen operations. Detached to Wuerselen from 11-27 November, the regiment missed the first phase of Operation Clipper but became the key instrument in the XIII Corps push to the Roer.

On 29 November Colonel Hugh C. Parker's 335th attacked without artillery preparation toward Toad Hill and Lindern. Three platoons from Companies I and K crossed the antitank ditch and reached Lindern at daylight with barely one hundred men, holding beyond the railroad embankment until tanks and the rest of the regiment could force a route in. German counterattacks by SS and panzer elements failed to recover the village. A battalion also fought for Toad Hill and, on 30 November, cleared Beeck after an all-day struggle.

During the Ardennes the regiment fought with the division's Marche-Hotton defense and was attached to the 3rd Armored Division. Returning to Germany, the 335th sealed the flank of the 334th after the Roer crossing, passed through Baal on 24 February, and took Doveren after tanks of the 771st Tank Battalion helped overcome bypassed resistance. It expanded the division bridgehead to Houverath on 25 February, then joined the rapid advance to the Rhine. In March the regiment captured Krefeld and fought at Baerl near the Rheinhausen railroad bridge while other division elements reached Homberg. After the Rhine defense period, the 335th forced the Weser south of Neesen on 6 April and helped secure the Wesergebirge bridgehead, then advanced through Hannover to the Elbe and Soviet contact.
