362nd Infantry Regiment Combat History

The 362nd Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp White, Oregon, on August 15, 1942, and trained with the 91st Division before departing Hampton Roads on April 13, 1944. It reached North Africa on April 21 and landed in Italy on June 19. After the division entered combat north of Rome, the regiment passed through Capannoli on July 17 and crossed the Era River during the advance toward the Arno.

The regiment's hardest sustained fighting came in the Gothic Line. In September it fought at Monte Calvi and through the Futa Pass defenses, reaching the antitank ditch below Santa Lucia on September 16, holding positions near Monte Calvi as the Germans began withdrawing, and then clearing Santa Lucia and Monte Gazzaro before entering Futa Pass. It later helped reduce the remaining pass defenses and moved into position for the fight beyond Radicosa Pass.

In October the 362nd attacked toward Loiano on the 91st Division right. Its 2nd Battalion entered the battered village on October 5 and, after a counterattack, established an outpost line beyond it. Two days later the regiment attacked Monte Castellari without artillery preparation in rain and fog, failed at first, then placed elements on the crest during the night of October 8-9, opening the last high ground between Loiano and Livergnano. The regiment was withdrawn from the narrowed line later in the month. After winter defensive duty and the division's April return to Highway 65, the 362nd joined the pursuit from the Apennines into the Po Valley, crossed the Po near Sermide on April 24, and moved through Cerea, Legnago, the Brenta line, and Treviso before German forces in Italy surrendered.
