7th Cavalry Regiment Combat History

The 7th Cavalry Regiment joined the 1st Cavalry Division's first campaign after the initial landing on Los Negros. Its 2nd Squadron reinforced the 5th Cavalry on March 4, 1944, as the division held and expanded the Momote Airfield beachhead. The squadron helped secure Lombrum Plantation and Hauwei Island, then artillery and additional troops prepared for the assault on Manus. On March 15 the regiment followed the 8th Cavalry ashore near Lugos Mission, defended the beachhead, and entered the drive on Lorengau airdrome. Elements of the 7th and 8th Cavalry overran the airfield on March 18, after which the 7th Cavalry worked along the Rossum road and later sent a reinforced squadron against Pityilu Island.

On Leyte, the 7th Cavalry landed on October 20, 1944, on the division's right flank. It helped secure the Tacloban landing area, San Jose, Tacloban Airfield, and the Cataisan Peninsula, then moved north as the division opened San Juanico Strait and pushed toward Carigara. During the later Leyte fighting the regiment relieved the attached 112th Cavalry at the ridge south of Limon and captured the position on December 14, a key part of the division's movement toward the Ormoc corridor and the west coast.

The regiment landed on Luzon with the division in January 1945 and entered the Manila campaign. In February it captured crossings over the Mariquina River in the Ugong-Rosario area, helping the division expand its position east of the capital before the attack against the Shimbu Line. After a rehabilitation period, the 7th Cavalry shifted into southern Luzon. It seized Alaminos on April 1, advanced toward Mount Malepunyo, and operated with the division as Japanese forces were driven into pockets north of Mount Matassana Bundoc and beyond the Laguna de Bay-Mauban line.
