The 37th Infantry Division first entered combat in the Solomon Islands, where elements of the 145th Infantry Regiment and 148th Infantry Regiment joined the assault on New Georgia in July 1943 — the 148th Infantry attacking Bartley Ridge then Horseshoe Hill, where it was surrounded July 26–August 1, and the 145th Infantry clearing Bartley Ridge on July 31. The whole division was ashore by July 22, and Munda Airfield fell on August 5, 1943 after prolonged fighting. The division then moved to Bougainville, the 148th Infantry landing first on November 8 followed by the 129th Infantry Regiment on November 13 and the 145th Infantry on November 19. Relieving the Marines, the division held the perimeter and repulsed eight Japanese divisional counterattacks in March 1944, including an assault on Hill 700 that drove a salient into the 145th Infantry's lines on March 8 and a general counterattack that penetrated the 129th Infantry's positions on March 23 before being defeated.
Landing at Lingayen Gulf on Luzon on January 9, 1945, the division advanced against strong opposition toward Clark Field, the 148th Infantry taking San Carlos on January 10. The 145th and 148th Infantry reached the runways of Clark Field on January 26 and captured their objectives with the 129th Infantry on January 31. The division then turned south toward Manila, the 148th Infantry reaching the city on February 4. After crossing the Pasig River, the division fought house-to-house through the city; the assault on Intramuros began February 23 with the 145th Infantry storming the Quezon and Parian Gates while the 129th Infantry crossed the Pasig in assault boats and took the Mint Building, and the 148th Infantry cleared the Legislative Building. Manila was secured by March 3.
After Manila, the division pushed north toward Baguio through difficult mountain terrain alongside other American units and Filipino guerrillas, remaining engaged in northern Luzon through the end of the war.
