22nd Infantry Regiment Combat History

The 22nd Infantry Regiment served with the 4th Infantry Division throughout the European campaign, except for short attachments to other divisions. Before overseas movement it trained from Fort McClellan through Fort Benning, Camp Gordon, Fort Dix, Camp Gordon Johnston, and Fort Jackson. It staged at Camp Kilmer, sailed from New York on January 18, 1944, and arrived in England on January 29. On June 6, the regiment landed at Utah Beach after the first assault waves; its 3rd Battalion had been attached to the 8th Infantry for the initial landing, while the regiment's main body moved north along the coastal flank.

The 22nd Infantry quickly became engaged against the fortified Azeville-Crisbecq line. On June 9 it forced the Azeville garrison to surrender, helped open the route toward Quineville, and continued the Cotentin drive. In the final Cherbourg operation, the 3rd Battalion entered Montebourg, the regiment cut the Cherbourg-St. Pierre-Eglise road, fought to clear its own rear areas under confused conditions, reinforced the 12th Infantry's attack toward Tourlaville, and contained the Maupertus sector as the port fell. In July, while attached to the 2nd Armored Division, the 22nd Regimental Combat Team joined the COBRA exploitation and blocking operations toward Tessy-sur-Vire and the Sienne.

After entering Belgium on September 6 and Germany on September 11, the regiment fought in the Schnee Eifel on the southern wing of the 4th Division attack and attempted to force Brandscheid. In the Huertgen Forest it endured broken terrain, enemy counterattack, and a dangerous gap in the division front before capturing Grosshau by frontal assault on November 29. During the Ardennes counteroffensive the 22nd held the division's right sector, while its 2nd Battalion helped stabilize the threatened Osweiler-Dickweiler line. In 1945 the regiment fought through Weinsheim, Fleringen, the Kyll approaches, the Rhine-Main advance, Koenigshofen, and Bavaria, reaching the Isar and Miesbach-Gusteig area before the fighting ended.
